Barbara Hannigan / Ludwig
Debussy / Schönberg / Berg
The German television arts show »aspekte« recently described her as a »cult figure of contemporary classical music«. For some time, Barbara Hannigan has performed as a soprano as well as a conductor. And what is more, she writes, plays and conducts – ideally with the Ludwig ensemble – a Dutch collective of musicians with whom she shares a passion for unusual interpretations.
At the Elbphilharmonie, Hannigan appears with a programme of beguiling diversity. Opening with Debussy’s subtly mystic »Syrinx«, it moves on to a threshold piece of the approaching modern: Schönberg’s »Verklärte Nacht« (Transfigured Night) evokes the harmonic language of Romanticism, yet atonality is not far away.
After excerpts from »Lulu«, Alban Berg’s opera about the ecstatic life of a femme fatale, the concert closes with music by George Gershwin. In »Girl Crazy« urban jazz meets European art music, laced with a turbulent love story.
