Bang on a Can All-Stars
»Greatest Hits« Festival
The musicians of Bang on a Can All-Stars are feted all over the world for their stylistically diverse approach to contemporary music, and in this concert, present new works composed over the last year. For their album »Field Recordings« they asked friends from various musical genres to write new works based on tape recordings of voices, melodies or sounds from nature. The participants in the multi-media project included Bryce Dessner, guitarist of The National, minimal music pioneer Steve Reich, electronic artist Tyondai Braxton, and Bang on a Can founders Julia Wolfe, David Lang and Michael Gordon. The results, which the All-Stars present here as part of the »Greatest Hits« Festival, are as divergent as their creators.
Bang on a Can started in 1987 as a one-day New York-based Marathon concert featuring unknown artists. Today, it is a multi-faceted performing arts organisation with a broad range of year-round international activities. One current project is the Bang on a Can All-Stars, who tour to major festivals and concert venues around the world every year to perform ultra-dynamic live performances and present their recordings of today’s most innovative music. The goal of Bang on a Can: to build a world in which powerful new musical ideas flow freely across all genres and borders.
