The weapons of light

A grand orchestral work with a chorus at the end – since Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, this was the non plus ultra for many composers. Felix Mendelssohn wrote what was perhaps the most successful version of this concept, which makes the finale of his Second Symphony into a hymn of praise for the Lord with an overwhelming impact. Thomas Hengelbrock conducts the Balthasar Neumann Choir and Orchestra, supported by the choirs of the Palau de la Música Catalana, in an exciting performance of this brilliant hybrid of symphony and cantata.

While the first three movements of Mendelssohn’s »Lobgesang« (Hymn of Praise) Symphony already build up a gripping maelstrom without vocal parts, the music gains further intensity when the instruments are joined by a chorus and soloists in the finale.

With large choirs, delicate ensemble passages and dramatic solos, Mendelssohn establishes an arc of suspense with an inspiring message: Man arms himself against fear and doubt with the weapons of light. A powerful statement that brings this energy-laden concert to a close with a bright crown of music.
