Aznash Ensemble
Focus on the Caucasus
The music of Chechen culture is not widely known in Europe but this ensemble is about to change that. The four members of the Aznash Ensemble from Georgia present the sounds of a fascinating musical hub between the Middle East, the Caucasus and Central Asia.
The Aznash Ensemble is a quartet dedicated to the traditional songs of Chechnya. The region’s folk culture is a melting pot of Persian music, Caucasian ballads, Slavic melancholy and the rhythm of songs from the Mongolian steppe.
The expressive female voices are accompanied by accordion, lute and percussion. One of the special features in the quartet’s repertoire is their unaccompanied singing of traditional Sufi songs – trance-inducing a cappella pieces that also feature in Chechen religious services.
