Celebrating Piazzolla’s 100th Birthday
There are plenty of things to celebrate tonight: there is the fact that concerts can finally take place again at the Elbphilharmonie. Or people’s eager anticipation of the first visit to a concert in such a long time, of an evening that promises to be something special. But there is also the birthday of Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, who would have turned 100 on 11 March 2021. The two outstanding soloists Arabella Steinbacher and Martynas Levickis pay tribute to the grand master of the tango with an anniversary programme that combines several of his best-known and most touching compositions. In addition to »Adios Nónino« – Piazzolla’s melancholy and passionate memento of his deceased father – they also play the exciting »Four Seasons of Buenos Aires«, which follows the pulse of the city in music and takes us on a tour of the capital of tango argentino.
