Apollon Musagète Quartett
Puccini / Arensky / Sibelius
Not only did the Apollon Musagète Quartett win first prize at the 57th ARD Music Competition in 2008, they also won all the additional special prizes on top of this. What a kick-off to an international career! The luscious sound, the musicians’ intimate way of playing together, their technical sovereignty – these four gentlemen from Poland were immediately greeted with rapturous enthusiasm throughout Europe.
For their debut at the Elbphilharmonie the quartet offers an extraordinary programme: all composers featured this evening have written very little chamber music. The juxtaposition of Puccini’s expressive funeral music »Crisantemi« with Grieg’s rough Nordic string quartet is an unusual treat, as is hearing Sibelius’s stately »Andante festivo«. It is usually performed in a version for orchestra and timpani; the string quartet version, by contrast, has a different and new intensity. Expect an evening of little gems from the chamber music repertoire.
