Anna Prohaska / Julius Drake
»Paradise Lost« – Song Recital
In search of paradise lost
Back in the 17th century, English poet John Milton set out in search of »Paradise Lost« in his epic poem of that name: a place that the celebrated soprano Anna Prohaska and pianist Julius Drake also travel to together. In their song recital of the same name, great composers from different eras and countries point the way thither in music. In England, for example, composers like Henry Purcell and Benjamin Britten were spellbound by Milton’s masterpiece, and set related texts to music.
But in the German-speaking countries as well, various song composers took inspiration on more than one occasion from the story of Adam, Eve and the apple, among them such heavyweights as Schubert, Schumann and Brahms. The viewpoints taken couldn’t be more different – from Ravel’s nature idyll »Trois beaux oiseaux du Paradis« through Charles Ives’s melancholy »Evening« to Hanns Eisler’s cynical »Hollywood Elegies«. So the audience can look forward to an excursion to the Garden of Eden full of variety.
