Anna Meredith
Unconventional and unpredictable
A glance at the statistics speaks volumes: only a fraction of the classical music internationally performed was written by women. And even in the world of post-modern composers, women are heavily underrepresented. Time to change that. One of today’s most prominent women composers is Britain’s Anna Meredith. She was Composer-in-Residence with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and won the Scottish Album of the Year award in 2016. Her debut album, »Varmints«, was released to critical acclaim, and her sophomore record, »FIBS«, was deservedly awarded the title Album of the Year 2019 by Electronic Music.
With creative enthusiasm, feverish intensity and a good dose of self-confidence she alternates between classical tradition and artsy pop, mixing prog rock with techno elements and enticing new soundscapes from familiar instruments that culminate in a frenetic soundtrack of today’s zeitgeist.
Her creative frenzy, her unpredictability and her inexhaustible muse seem to combine exactly what we need in future – vision, rich diversity and strong personalities who set out bravely to search for new horizons.
