Bittersweet soundtrack

When Anna Calvi released »Hunted« in the spring of 2020, a collection of reworks from her Europe-wide acclaimed third album »Hunter« (2018), the world was busy looking straight into the abyss. The lusty sounds of the London guitar virtuoso have been reinterpreted by artists such as Charlotte Gainsbourg and Julia Holter with a grace that is, not at least in part, attributable to the great song writing of the originals. Calvi’s compositions ooze confidence and sensuality but never smother you with it – quite the opposite: the three albums she has released to date can probably be described more as graceful art rock, whose wine-red guitar textures always maintain a fine balance between indie romanticism and gothic vibes. Calvi’s voice remains the unifying element behind and across everything. The bittersweet qualities of life are given a soundtrack here which unifies empowerment and vulnerability. Understandably, we’re especially pleased that Calvi’s 2020 cancelled show can now be made up for in full – surprises included.
