ANIM Ensemble (Ensemble Safar)
Sufi Festival / World Classical Music
Afghan masters
The opening of the three-day Sufi Festival at the Elbphilharmonie brings an ensemble to Hamburg that was originally invited to appear at the »Silk Road« Festival over Easter 2020; the entitre event unfortunately had to be cancelled owing to the pandemic. But now the Ensemble Safar, renamed as the ANIM Ensemble, can be heard at last in the Recital Hall, playing Sufi music and classical pieces from the heyday of Afghan music on its fascinating range of instruments. Their concert is a striking introduction to this varied and transnational panorama of Sufi music.
The music is performed by master interpreters of the »Afghanistan National Institute of Music« (ANIM), which was founded in Kabul in 2010 and was awarded the Polar Music Prize in 2018. The Institute’s activities in the interest of Afghan music were brought to an abrupt end when the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan again in summer 2021. Despite and because of repeated reprisals from the Taliban, the members of the ensemble and nearly 300 students of the Institute were flown from Kabul to Portugal, where they were granted group asylum, and where they are currently living and continuing to work.
