A women’s festival for the world
The premiere of this all-star evening took place a few years ago: in 2016, Angélique Kidjo was given carte blanche for a project to mark the 50th anniversary of the Montreux Jazz Festival. The integrative and charismatic singer soon realised that she wanted to take the opportunity to gain the international attention for at least a few of Africa’s fantastic young women musicians that is generally denied them in a music world dominated by men. She wanted to celebrate these women for adhering to their musical vision and remaining active as artists, despite all manner of social opposition.
Thus the culmination of the »Reflektor« Festival, where Angélique Kidjo gathers most of the singers invited to form the African Women All-Stars, should be understood as an event of mutual empowerment, in which the audience will certainly play an active role as well. Anyone who has already been to a concert with Angélique Kidjo knows that this radiant light of Pan-African and indeed global culture always has people in her heart and her mind, and celebrates her rousing art for them.
