Angela Winkler / delian :: quartett: »Brecht im Spiegel«
Harbour Front Sounds
Between light and dark
In the first programme half of »Brecht im Spiegel« (»Brecht in the Mirror«), texts by Bertolt Brecht are contrapuntally juxtaposed with Dmitri Shostakovich’s »String Quartet No. 4«, which is as moving as it is harrowing. It was written in 1948 under the oppression of the Stalin era and the accusations of »formalistic degeneracy and anti-democratic tendencies« levelled against the composer. In the second part, Brecht’s texts are interwoven with songs by Kurt Weill, Hanns Eisler and Franz Servatius Bruinier.
The musicians in the delian :: quartet wax lyrical about their work with Angela Winkler: »Having a such a superb artist as Angela Winkler working with us virtually obliges us to use all the facets this collaboration opens up. Our impactful Brecht project features both readings and Angela Winkler’s vocal artistry, in the tradition of Lotte Lenya.« This evening offers nothing less than dialogues that touch the soul – between light and dark, wit and bitterness, disillusionment and tenderness.
