An Evening with Devendra Banhart and Guests
Reflektor Nils Frahm
Devendra Banhart became the figurehead of a neo-hippie movement. But his cosmopolitan attitude and lasting curiosity saved him from getting stuck in that groove. Banhart’s latest album, »Ape in Pink Marble«, sounds more like folk music from the future than like retro sounds. And a stimulating exotic scent wafts through the songs. At Nils Frahm’s »Reflektor« festival, Devendra Banhart has promised to also perform some new, hitherto unpublished material.

How are you supposed to react when the media carousel around you is rotating faster and faster, when the music business starts falling apart and you lose all orientation in the boundless digital universe? The American-Venezuelan musician Devendra Banhart is one of the pioneers of a generation that sought salvation at the beginning of the 21st century by looking back: simple songs that tell intimate stories, mostly with just a guitar for accompaniment, with a tendency to be brooding and self-absorbed, and a good dose of psychedelia. This marked the birth of the music that later conquered hipster flat shares the world over on labels like »Freak Folk« or »New Weird America«.
