Schubert’s Trout Quintet, one of the most popular chamber music works in the classical repertoire, takes its name from the fourth movement – a set of variations on the composer’s earlier song »The Trout«. However, Schubert did not quote the passage in which the fish is caught, making the work one of the composer’s most bright and lively, despite occasional minor passages. The piece builds a bridge between folk music, salon and Romanticism, and thereby demonstrates a central characteristic of Schubert’s creative work. In the spirit of a »Schubertiade« – musical evenings in a private setting celebrating Schubert’s work – Alice Sara Ott, one of the most sought-after pianists of her generation, performs with musical friends. With the trust and understanding that exists between these artists, the intimacy and spontaneity required for good chamber music is guaranteed. And since an evening without lieder can’t be considered a proper »Schubertiade«, Benjamin Appl – the baritone who is already regarded as an authority on the art song despite his young age – joins the illustrious circle.
