If you saw them practising on the Elbphilharmonie stage, you could be forgiven for mistaking Alexej Gerassimez and the two Jussen brothers for stage hands helping to set up the percussion instruments. But when you experience the three young musicians playing, it quickly becomes clear that they have a very different role to play on stage. Highly talented and ambitious, the young stars, supported by Franz Bach from the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, have put together a rhythmically complicated and virtuosic programme. It includes what must be the only classic repertoire piece for this unusual combination of instruments – Béla Bartók’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion – and one of Alexej Gerassimez’s own compositions.
