Academy of St Martin in the Fields / Julia Fischer
Bach / Schnittke / Elgar / Tchaikovsky – Hamburg International Music Festival
Brilliant strings playing
The audience can look forward to melodious playing on the strings for the entirety of this concert: under the baton of star violinist Julia Fischer, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields presents a programme covering works from the Baroque through the Romantic era to modern music. The concert opens with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Concerto in D minor for Two Violins, in which Julia Fischer joins forces with her young Munich colleague Lena Neudauer to conjure up the flair of Bach’s time. It is followed by the stylistic diversity of Alfred Schnittke’s Concerto grosso, which combines contemporary sounds with film music, Baroque quotations with the tango – and praises a musical utopia that makes no distinction between »light« and »serious« music. The evening is brought to a brilliant close by two High Romantic evergreens: the string serenades by Elgar and Tchaikovsky.
