Persian family ties

For his last concert of the season, Artist in Residence Kian Soltani delves into classical Persian music and, thereby, into his family history: Soltani’s parents came to Austria in the 1970s to study music. His father, Khosro Soltani, is both a bassoonist and recorder player and also plays the Persian wind instruments ney and duduk. With these, he plays in Ensemble Shiraz – which has frequently given joint concerts with Kian Soltani and his cello for several years and which will be part of the Elbphilharmonie Community Project »Lost & Found« in 2026.

»Persian music has something very playful for me,« says Kian Soltani. With its improvised sections and abundant embellishments and ornaments, it is freer than classical music – and at least as intricate. Alongside wind instruments, the oud and percussion are of course essential.
