Chopin in the Spotlight

When pianist Igor Levit gives a recital, we would expect him to be playing Beethoven, Brahms or Bach. This autumn, things are different. Alongside Schumann’s atmospheric »Night Pieces«, his concert includes sonatas by Schubert and Chopin. When asked about Chopin in the past, Levit has always said, »There are composers I would rather listen to than have to play their music on the piano.« Like all other budding professional pianists, he did have to spend some time as a student practising the great composer’s numerous nocturnes, ballads, preludes and waltzes. However, Levit’s interpretation of Chopin’s expressive and beautiful music has very rarely seen the light of day at a public performance. Until now! Chopin’s Third Sonata in B minor will be the momentous centrepiece of his piano recital at the Elbphilharmonie as we enjoy an enthralling evening of music.
