Mozart magic and Bach bliss

When András Schiff was invited to perform all of Mozart’s piano concertos at Salzburg’s Mozartwoche in 1999, it led to the birth of a new orchestra. Schiff called that ensemble Cappella Andrea Barca – the name being a play on the founder’s name: András (Andrea) Schiff (Barca). The project orchestra quickly became a musically versatile authority – but one that still regularly returns to Mozart and his piano concertos.

Schiff the conducting pianist juxtaposes the revisited Mozart works with two polyphonic concertos by Bach, a composer whose music he has been playing to start each day for years: »Bach in the morning is balm for the soul«.

The same can, of course, also be said of Mozart’s two late piano concertos – which are, for Schiff, »truly accomplished, great and perfect«. These include the Concerto in A Major KV 488, which was composed at the same time as »Le nozze di Figaro« in 1786, and the Concerto in B Flat Major, which Mozart wrote in 1791, the year of his death.
