Boston Symphony Orchestra / Jean-Yves Thibaudet / Andris Nelsons
Simon: Four Black American Dances / Stravinsky: Petrushka / Gershwin: Piano Concerto / Ravel: La valse
One of the best American orchestras opens this subscription series; the Munich Philharmonic brings it to a brilliant close with Mahler. In between: Bach and Mozart interpreted by Sir András Schiff and a varied Schumann programme
The new season gets off to a distinctly American start: as well as being one of the »Big Five« orchestras in the USA, the Boston Symphony Orchestra under its principal conductor Andris Nelsons also comes complete with two US composers. The Portuguese Remix Ensemble has thrilled audiences in Hamburg several times before with its special programmes and now it presents an arrangement of Schumann’s famous song cycle »Dichterliebe«, co-commissioned by the Elbphilharmonie. Bach and Mozart are left in the masterful hands of Sir András Schiff and his orchestra, while Mahler’s monumental Fifth Symphony makes for a grandiose finale, performed by the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.
