Easter Highlights
Famous sacred works such as Bach’s »St Matthew Passion«, a concert performance of »Carmen« and stars of the classical music scene such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner – no wishes remain unfulfilled this Easter
In keeping with the significant Christian holiday, three great sacred works are on the programme for Holy Week. In Handel’s oratorio, Sir John Eliot Gardiner tells the story of how the Israelites freed themselves from Egyptian captivity and survived the ten biblical plagues, while Philippe Herreweghe relates the Passion of Jesus in Bach’s famous »St Matthew Passion« on Maundy Thursday. Finally, on Good Friday, the celebrated British vocal ensemble Tenebrae and its founder Nigel Short embark on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain: in seven languages and great stylistic diversity, Joby Talbot has captured the special atmosphere of the spiritual sites along the Camino de Santiago in his full-length a cappella work »Path of Miracles«. Also set in Spain is the plot of Georges Bizet’s opera »Carmen«, which René Jacobs brings to the stage in its original sound at the beginning of the week.
