Description

Few interpreters are as committed to the uncompromising quest for truth and beauty in music as Mitsuko Uchida. The Japanese-born pianist appears to be filled with austere spirituality. At the same time, however, the city of Vienna – Uchida’s domicile of choice for many years – has left its mark on her performance style and personality, characterised by her partiality for Mozart and Schubert.

Uchida is linked to the new concert hall in numerous ways and she has accordingly been given the honour of performing the first-ever piano recital in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall ever.

Acclaimed as a pianist of great sensitivity, Mitsuko Uchida was also entrusted with the selection of the concert grand piano for the new concert hall. She takes part in the acoustic testing of the Grand Hall and, on 18 January, will give the first piano recital in these splendid surroundings. Jörg Widmann has composed a new work for this special event – it is a point of honour that he and Uchida appear together on stage in an evocative duo programme.
