Such huge praise in advance is highly unusual. However, when Andris Nelsons conducted his first concert as the newly appointed music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in September 2014, he received standing ovations even before a single note was played. This gesture shows what an outstanding reputation the Latvian conductor already had, and he was only 35 years old at the time. During the concert series »International Orchestras«, audiences in Hamburg have two wonderful opportunities to appreciate Nelson’s talent during the 2015/2016 season.

Not long before, Nelsons had mastered the difficult task of conducting concerts at the Lucerne Festival that were originally to have been led by the late Claudio Abbado. The NZZ (Neue Zürcher Zeitung) described Nelsons as »a passionate expressionist who sets every musical score alight and exerts a compelling force«. In addition, five other leading conductors give guest performances with »their« orchestras at the Laeiszhalle, beginning with Vladimir Fedoseyev, who has been at the helm in Moscow for more than three decades, followed by Christoph Eschenbach and the Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo. Also en route to Hamburg are Philippe Jordan, music director of the Paris Opera, and his counterpart in London, Sir Antonio Pappano, who come to Hamburg with their concert orchestras from Vienna and Rome respectively.
