Vienna Philharmonic / Igor Levit / Christian Thielemann
Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2 & Symphony No. 3
With great creative energy
»Yes, it requires a huge amount of work, but it’s a score that keeps on giving,« says Igor Levit about Johannes Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto. It has a reputation as one of the trickiest piano concertos in the repertoire, calling for constant presence from the soloist: he acts as the »control centre«, in dialogue with the orchestra throughout, supplying new ideas, completing motifs and providing impetus. Who then, if not Igor Levit with his unbounded creative energy, would be up to the challenge?
He has an absolute expert for 19th century repertoire at his side in the person of Christian Thielemann. And the Vienna Philharmonic? An ensemble that has been synonymous with first-class orchestral sound for nearly 200 years. Even Brahms, generally a reserved figure, described himself almost euphorically as a »friend and admirer« of theirs. So his music is without a shadow of a doubt in the best hands with the Viennese musicians!
