The Symphonic Music of Wayne Shorter
Ravi Coltrane / esperanza spalding / Danilo Pérez / John Patitucci / Terri Lyne Carrington / Symphoniker Hamburg / Clark Rundell
Jazz legend
When asked what he understood jazz to be, Wayne Shorter answered: »The word ›jazz‹ to me only means ›I dare you‹.« Over the course of his long career, the legendary saxophonist demonstrated this appetite for risk countless times, writing jazz history in the process – be that alongside Miles Davis or with his own jazz-fusion band Weather Report. Shorter died in March 2023, just before his 90th birthday. An all-star band and the Symphoniker Hamburg now remember the symphonic jazz composer.
esperanza spalding (voice), Ravi Coltrane (saxophone) as well as the long-standing Shorter accompanists Danilo Pérez (piano), John Patitucci (bass), and Terri Lyne Carrington (drums) present a number of works, including the symphonic vocal cycle »Gaia«.
Composed for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra in 2013, the piece named after the Greek goddess of the Earth conjures up elemental jazz forces – while esperanza spalding’s radiant singing hovers between heaven and earth.
