The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen under its chief conductor Paavo Järvi has garnered well-deserved awards for its masterly readings of Beethoven and Schumann, and they have now shown their mettle again with Brahms: in 2018 the orchestra won the Opus Klassik prize for the first release in their complete recording of the Brahms symphonies. The Bremen-based musicians are no less refreshing and thrilling when they turn their attention to Brahms’s piano works, as they demonstrate tonight together with star pianist Igor Levit, who sees the orchestra as a perfect partner. In tonight’s concert, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen follows Brahms with a composer he admired greatly: Haydn and his famous »Drumroll« Symphony.
»What a capital fellow he was! We pale into insignificance alongside him!« With these words, Johannes Brahms paid renewed tribute in 1896 to Haydn and his late symphonies. Among these is the Symphony No. 103, first performed in London in 1795, which owes its nickname to the long roll on the timpani with which it opens.
