Originally set up by musician José Antonio Abreu in 1975, the unique music education project »El Sistema« provides children and young people from a poor background with instruments and free music lessons. The photographer Andreas Knapp has been accompanying the work of one of the project’s ensembles, the Simon Bolivar Orchestra, since 2004. His photos can be seen in the Hamburg Central Library from 13 to 25 March. The exhibition is open 11:00 to 19:00 from Monday to Saturday.
The fruits of this truly unique musical initiative can be heard at the »¡Viva Beethoven!« festival, when star conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the Simon Bolivar Orchestra, both successful products of »The System«, perform all nine Beethoven symphonies at the Elbphilharmonie.
