Meta4
Shostakovich / Beethoven / Saariaho
The Meta4 string quartet finally returns to Hamburg: five years ago, the quartet gave an intoxicating performance at the »Rantakala« festival. This original and unconventional ensemble has become firmly established internationally since their founding around 15 years ago.
Their breakthrough came in 2004 when they won the first prize at the Shostakovich Competition in Moscow. Since then, the quartet has carefully developed and expanded its repertoire. In addition to the standard works, compositions by Finnish composers are very important to the four musicians. They also focus on 20th century composers, in particular Shostakovich, to whose music Meta4 dedicated a CD in 2012.
The programme for their Hamburg performance also draws from these musical roots. »Terra Memoria«, the second string quartet by the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, written in 2006, is the starting point for a journey back into history via Shostakovich’s melancholic String Quartet No. 4 to Beethoven’s late String Quartet op. 132, which features the famous »Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit«.
