Explosive orchestral colours, impressive narratives, rapturous melodies: if a piece of music boasts these ingredients, then it is Sir Simon Rattle who makes them shine as hardly anyone else does. He has been head of the London Symphony Orchestra since 2017, and together the conductor and his London ensemble have put on countless exciting concert programmes. But it will be soon be time to bid farewell to this musical team which possesses such an unerring feeling for masterpieces with that certain something.
In mid-2023 Rattle will become principal conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir. Away from his roots, and on to new pastures. But in Rattle’s case this evidently means making the most of his latest joint projects with the LSO one last time.
