London Philharmonic Orchestra / Nicolas Altstaedt / Edward Gardner
Dvořák: Cello Concerto / Stravinsky: Petrushka
Pure passion
Nicolas Altstaedt is one of the most versatile cellists of our time. Paying no attention to the boundaries of specific eras, he plays his way through the entire cello repertoire – and at the highest level. In this concert he is accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Edward Gardner in what is probably the most romantic work written for his instrument: Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto.
A work that is pure passion – something that applies to the other piece on the programme too, namely Stravinsky’s ballet »Petrushka«, which is heard here in a concert performance. In this score the Russian composer brilliantly puts the hustle and bustle of the fairground, the delirium of love and even a murder committed out of jealousy into music. A thrilling experience, even without dancers!
