La Cetra Barockorchester Basel / Leila Schayegh
»Der französische Corelli« – Das Alte Werk
Hitting the highest notes
At the high point of his renown, he was France’s no. 1 violin virtuoso; at the end of his career, he was living in a slum, and was stabbed to death in a fight. He travelled all over Europe, living in Paris and Lyon, in The Hague and Turin. We don’t know for sure how he managed to descend from a duke’s music director to the improverished victim of an act of violence. But it is clear that Jean-Marie Leclair was one of the most interesting artists of his time.
To this day, Leclair is overshadowed by his very famous Italian colleague Arcangelo Corelli. Corelli’s main achievement was to establish the concerto grosso genre, where a small group of instrumental players is pitted against the whole orchestra, which flourished hugely under his aegis.
The Swiss ensemble La Cetra and the internationally acclaimed violinist Leila Schayegh devote a complete concert to Leclair and Corelli, where it becomes clear that the Frenchman was definitely able to hold a candle to Corelli, who was a generation older, in terms of musical quality. A delight (not only) for fans of great violin playing!
