JACK Quartet
New York Stories: Works by Julia Wolfe / Morton Feldman / Derek Bermel / etc.
When it comes to performing their work for the first time, the four musicians of the JACK Quartet are first-choice artists for many composers, due to their impeccable technique, which they combine with keen intellect and absolute dedication to the music. Over the past few years, they have thus collaborated with some of the most renowned, cutting-edge composers of our time such as Steve Reich, Matthias Pintscher and John Zorn.
In this concert, the JACK Quartet presents among other pieces a brand new composition by Derek Bermel that was inspired by the literary works of Afro-American novelist Ralph Waldo Ellison. The composition toys with the different appearances of human speech in music, from the breathing harmonica of the blues and the phrasings of gospel music to the rhythmic raps in hip-hop.
Julia Wolfe, co-founder of New York’s legendary Bang on a Can collective, needs no further introduction as a composer. Her intense, stirring string quartets had a huge impact on the chamber music scene. Also on the JACK Quartet’s programme tonight: works by Cenk Ergün, Ruth Crawford-Seeger and Morton Feldman.
