Description

The programme for the eighth Philharmonic Concert by the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra is a solemn one. Pierre Boulez’s »Rituel«, which was composed in 1974 in memory of the recently deceased Italian composer and conductor Bruno Maderna, was intended as »a ceremony of memory«. Boulez prefixed his composition with the words, »In constant alternation: as it were, the psalm verses and responsories of an imaginary ceremony«. In addition to gongs and temple bells, the piece also features the Indian hand drum tabla.

When he was composing his Great Mass in C minor, Mozart had recently moved from Salzburg to Vienna and had already turned his back on church music. Despite that, the mass – which is, like his Requiem, incomplete – is not only one of Mozart’s most opulent works, but also one of the outstanding mass settings in European musical history.
