(Musical) life before Bach

Conductor Raphaël Pichon and his ensemble Pygmalion have long since achieved the utmost international recognition, both for their expressive readings of Renaissance and Baroque works, and for their cleverly-designed programmes, which combine the familiar with the unfamiliar, bringing ever new facets of international music history into the limelight. In the second part of their concert series »Ways to Bach«, the artists look at the musical ground on which Johann Sebastian Bach was able to learn and to progress to true mastery of his art.

Please ntoe: Raphaël Pichon unfortunately has to cancel his participation in today’s concert at short notice due to illness; concertmaster Sophie Gent will take over.

In three sections, the choir and ensemble present composers whose music had a significant influence on Bach. Among these are masters like Heinrich Schütz as well as Italian composers such as Claudio Monteverdi, who influenced European music far beyond the cities where they lived and worked. The final destination of this fascinating musical journey is the earliest surviving cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach: »Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich«.
