Claire Huangci
Pianomania
Since she won the 2018 Geza Andà Competition in Zürich with flying colours, Claire Huangci has been justly regarded as one of the top pianists of the younger generation. For a longer time she focused mainly on the Romantic virtuoso repertoire, but now the American pianist with Chinese roots is gradually discovering German composers, with whom she now returns to Hamburg and to the »Pianomania« series.
Her recital opens with a pianistic »Overture in the French style« by Bach, a complex work in eight movements, most of them with dance character that is heard far too rarely in the concert hall. Likewise full of vibrant rhythms are the »16 Waltzes« by Brahms and his famous »Hungarian Dances«, which obviously belong on the programme of »Pianomania«’s dance spotlight. Between the Bach and the Brahms, Huangci lets Schumann’s butterflies flutter past in »Papillons«, a work inspired by »confusion at a Fasching ball«, as the writer Jean Paul describes it in his novel fragment »Flegeljahre«.
