Music from the Black Sea

Avi Avital gained fame as a mandolin virtuoso playing classical music, or Baroque and Italian music, to be more precise. Composers have neglected this instrument for centuries so Avital decided to bring the mandolin, with its intimate, slightly chirping sound, to the attention of a growing community of fans around the world with transcriptions of works originally written for the violin.

Avital also loves folk music, especially from the Mediterranean. However, he feels most at home in a world in-between that is dominated neither by pure classical nor by unadulterated folk. Many years ago, he gave this space the name »Between Worlds«, the title of one of his albums.

Avital is now heading off on tour with nine like-minded instrumentalists who have grouped together under his direction in the »Between Worlds Ensemble«. In the joint programme »Black Sea« with the Rustavi Ensemble from Georgia, he gets to work on a musical cartography of the cultural sphere of that region.
