As a result of the new Germany-wide coronavirus restrictions that have been issued, all concerts in the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle have been cancelled initially from 2–30 November. There can be no Beethoven anniversary without the famous Fifth Symphony, that much is obvious. This year, when concert halls all over the world are are trying to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, the difficult circumstances notwithstanding, we encounter more often than usual this giant of a symphony with the catchy opening that nearly everyone knows. But we can expect a good deal more from the reading by the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées under Philippe Herreweghe: as Early Music specialists, the French ensemble and its Belgian conductor explore the finest nuances of the score.
