This is one of the summits of piano music. A pianist can spend his whole life walking around it, climbing it and taking it in. Bach’s Goldberg Variations, massive yet ineffably diverse, tower above all other works in the genre as a solitary summit.
Icelandic piano wizard Víkingur Ólafsson is devoting the entirety of his 2023/24 season to the famous aria with its 30 variations. We are looking forward with bated breath to his exploration of the Goldberg Variations! Back in 2018, Ólafsson made the classical music world prick up its ears with his first Bach album. And his unpretentious and inspired approach to the works of the great Baroque composer has lost none of its power to excite audiences.
