A fresh take on Mahler

Whenever one wonders whether there is still something new to be found in the »great classics« of music history, one should turn one’s attention (and ears) to the conductor Paavo Järvi. With his world-class orchestras, he regularly produces refreshing interpretations. He is currently in the midst of a Mahler cycle with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich – from which the orchestra is bringing the Symphony No. 5 to Hamburg.

A recording of this symphony was already made as part of the same cycle and it promptly won several awards: »Järvi’s Mahler is meticulous and full of tension, striking a successful balance between power and agility, without exaggerating the stark contrasts. A briskly flowing interpretation, rich in contrast, transparent and without pathos,« according to the German Record Critics’ Award.

»I hope that my music resonates both on an intellectual level and in the depths of the heart – this dual aspiration accompanies me with every new work,« says composer David Philip Hefti. And it works brilliantly: he has already composed several works for the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and the ensemble is eagerly awaiting this new piece.
