Great Emotions

For almost a quarter of a century, Franz Welser-Möst has stood at the helm of the Cleveland Orchestra – a close artistic partnership whose longevity has resulted in exceptional musical excellence. As one of the leading orchestras of the American continent, the ensemble is an essential part of the Elbphilharmonie’s »USA 250« focus. On the programme are works that build bridges between the »New« and the »Old« World.

Richard Strauss must have been an immensely proud family man: after all, he transformed everyday domestic life into music in his Sinfonia domestica, with sounds that evoke the deeds of a daring hero more than the bustle of lively family visits. Premiered in New York, the exuberant work was enthusiastically received on both sides of the Atlantic.

According to composer Bernd Richard Deutsch, the title »Intensity« reflects the emotional world surrounding the creation of the piece. In 2019, the Austrian composer began a three-year residency with the Cleveland Orchestra and was filled with energy and inspiration from new encounters with people and places. »Deutsch has a truly impressive command of writing for large orchestra,« wrote the newspaper Die Welt following the last Elbphilharmonie concert featuring his music.
