The Paganini of the tar

Sahib Pashazade from Azerbaijan is known as the »Paganini of the Tar«. He is a virtuosic master of the traditional tar lute and of mugham, the ancient music of the Caucasus. Pashazade and the percussionist Kamran Kerimov now give a guest performance in the Elbphilharmonie.

Mugham has its roots in Persian and Arabic music, and is a highly complex form of art music with strict ritualised execution. But since the tradition has only ever been passed on orally, musicians like Pashazade and his long-standing accompanist Kerimov have enough space to interpret pieces freely and to incorporate improvisation into their concerts. The award-winning duo plays with great intuition and feel for each other, and celebrates the ancient music of mugham in a modern and captivating way.
