Oslo Philharmonic / Klaus Mäkelä
Sibelius: Symphonies Nos. 3 & 5 – Hamburg International Music Festival
Back to the future
Jean Sibelius spent a long time brooding over the plans for his Fifth Symphony. But then he heard the song of no fewer than 16 swans in summer 1915, and suddenly found the solution. The Finnish composer made use of this natural spectacle straight away for the heavenly »Hymn of the Swans« in the finale of his Fifth, with which the Oslo Philharmonic and its new chief conductor Klaus Mäkelä round off their concert cycle of the complete Sibelius symphonies. In addition to the Fifth, the programme includes the neo-classicistic Third Symphony of 1907.
