Love joys, love pains
James Newby is one of the biggest up-and-coming stars on the classical vocalist scene. Whether he’s performing at an intimate recital or on a grand opera stage, prizes and praise are pouring in for the young Brit. Between 2018 and 2020 he was a BBC »New Generation Artist«; since 2019 he has also been part of the ensemble of the Hanover State Opera.
In his debut at the Elbphilharmonie, he sings Franz Schubert’s romantic and tragic »Schöner Müllerin«, as well as »Casanova in Lockdown« – a dramatic scene for baritone and piano, written especially for him by the British composer Judith Bingham. The baritone with the »soft-like-honey voice« (»The Times«) is accompanied by his fellow countryman, the vocal ace Joseph Middleton.
