Cosmopolitan Sound

Musician Gaye Su Akyol is one of the most interesting artistic voices in Turkey today. She combines influences from Middle Eastern folk music with post-punk, grunge or psychedelic surf rock to create a cosmopolitan sound design. After her sold-out concert at Knust in 2019, Akyol and her band will now play for the first time in the Grand Hall of the Elbphilharmonie in cooperation with the Kampnagel Summer Festival. With a strong live presence and avant-garde music videos, the trained painter from Istanbul’s hip Kadiköy district earned herself a global following. Praise in the New York Times, among others, described her as »Turkish rock music’s biggest hope«, harkening back to Turkey’s psychedelic music of the ’70s and folk icons like Selda Bağcan. Iggy Pop said of Akyol’s music that it was »so much more musical and satisfying than any popular music from the depleted West today.«
