Description

In 18th-century Hamburg, Rostock or Riga, performances of Telemann’s »Seliges Erwägen« (The Blessed Contemplation of the Bitter Suffering and Death of Jesus Christ) had a firm place in the concert calendar. But over the course of the 19th century, the formerly successful work gradually fell into oblivion. Gottfried von der Goltz and the Freiburger Barockorchester revive the memory of a piece that hasn’t been heard in Hamburg for far too long.

Telemann’s Passion oratorio »Seliges Erwägen« dates from around 1722, and was a real hit in its day. Telemann wrote the libretto himself, and the experienced composer of operas and church music proved his talent here for vivid illustration. Written »to encourage devotion« and first performed in the »Werk- und Zuchthaus« in Hamburg, Telemann’s musical depiction of the Passion influenced other composers for decades to come.
