Description
The Scottish Dunedin Consort, led by John Butt, takes its name from the Gaelic version of the capital city, Edinburgh. The ensemble’s Bach, Handel and Mozart interpretations have gone on to win the Midem Baroque Award, the Gramophone Award and have been hailed as a »Recording of the Month« by the BBC many times.
In Hamburg, Dunedin Consort will perform two relatively seldom played »Lutheran Masses« that Bach wrote for the main church service when he was the musical director of the Thomanerchor, now an internationally known boys’ choir based in Leipzig. The pieces, composed according to the Protestant mass tradition, consist of only Kyrie eleisons and Glorias.
Bach, the archetype cantor, the fifth evangelist, minstrel of God – the post he loved the most was chapel bandmaster at the court in Köthen, Anhalt. There he created »chamber music« for the elite, for example, his Orchestra Suite in c minor BWV 1066. Spiritual Bach, worldly Bach: the universe, however, stays the same.
