Exploring mystical spaces anew
A classic concert evening is the last thing the audience should expect when Barbara Hannigan and the piano duo Katia and Marielle Labèque join forces for a multimedia ride through time and space. Together with the video artist Netia Jones and the French composer and sound engineer David Chalmin, they explore the mystical spaces that music has been perambulating for centuries.
The focus is on the great women of music history, starting with the medieval mystic Hildegard von Bingen, who not only became known as a visionary and polymath, but also as a composer of liturgical songs. She was succeeded in the Baroque era by composers such as Barbara Strozzi and Francesca Caccini, both of whom were also active as singers – multi-talented musical all-rounders, then, not unlike Barbara Hannigan. Contemporary sounds are provided by David Chalmin and the American composer Bryce Dessner, who is familiar to many not only for his film scores but also as a member of the American rock band The National.
