Apparently, there are still people who believe that the Elbphilharmonie is an opera house. Well, yes and no: two of the world’s best opera orchestras can be heard in Subscription 1, albeit in concert version. While the guests from London’s Royal Opera House Covent Garden under their newly-appointed music director Jakub Hrůša present two gripping music dramas, the orchestra from La Scala in Milan under grand seigneur Riccardo Chailly concentrates on the symphonic repertoire. Hamburg’s new audience favourite Alexandre Kantorow is also taking part. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra continues its great Bruckner tradition – with its designated chief conductor Klaus Mäkelä, who celebrates his 30th birthday shortly beforehand, on the rostrum. The orchestra from Barcelona presents music from its Catalan homeland, while brilliant siblings Carolin and Jörg Widmann perform an original programme together with the Radio France Orchestra.
