Silvan Strauß

Elbphilharmonie Innerview: Silvan Strauß

»Music has a lot to do with dreams« – Hamburg drummer Silvan Strauß talks about how he found his way on to the stage, and about the special power that music has.

The series: Innerviews

Inwards – in the »Elbphilharmonie Innerviews«, artists explore the Elbphilharmonie in their own unique ways, letting their thoughts run free. The result: special insights into the spaces of the concert hall and a rare opportunity to get to know the artists personally beyond the stage.

»For me,« says drummer Silvan Strauß, who was awarded the prestigious Hamburg Jazz Prize in 2021, «music has a lot to do with dreams«. In the Elbphilharmonie Innerview he talks about music's special potential as a means of expression, and about just how good live performance can feel.

»Silvan Strauß stands for a forward-looking young Hamburg jazz scene!«

Sharing special moments :Silvan Strauß in the Elbphilharmonie Innerview

»I already wanted to be a drummer when I was a little boy,« Silvan Strauß remembers. »I made the dream come true, and I'm really proud of that.« And rightly so: in the meantime, the native of the Allgäu region plays in all Hamburg's clubs large and small, in the Elbphilharmonie and at festivals. »So many special moments and cool sounds« is how he sums it up modestly. What is it about for him? It's about sharing moments and feelings with other people.

For him, music is a means of expression – a language in which he can say more than with words. »That's what's fantastic about music,« he explains in the Innerview, »the fact that you can express things that can't be put into words or pictures.«

»It's great when you enjoy a special moment standing on stage and then you look at the audience and see that they are all enjoying that same special moment!«

An all-round jazzman :Silvan Strauß in the Hamburg music scene

Silvan Strauß has been appearing in a wide variety of formations for years now – together with his band ToyToy or as a sideman in bands like those of Maria João or Giovanni Weiß, as a guest drummer with the NDR Bigband and in the Lisa Wulff Quartet. »A jazz drummer with an outstanding technique, and with a range of styles that hardly anyone else has« – the praise came from the jury of the Hamburg Jazz Prize.

Strauß, a musician through and through, has already appeared at the Elbphilharmonie as well. During the corona lockdown, for example, he joined forces with the Lisa Wulff Trio to broadcast musical greetings from the empty Grand Hall – a concert stream with top-drawer jazz.
