Elbphilharmonie Summer

Two weeks of concerts in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall with major symphony orchestras and a unique summer mix of jazz, pop and world music

Description

So much variety in just two weeks! The Elbphilharmonie Summer presents a programme packed with diversity, as colourful as the counter in an ice cream parlour. The line-up includes classical symphony orchestras from all over the world: two top-class ensembles from Montréal and Kansas City, plus the dazzling Italian Baroque ensemble Il Giardino Armonico, which has the music of Antonio Vivaldi in its DNA. The Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra was founded in 2022 in response to Russia’s war of aggression. The next generation of top musicians is waiting in the wings with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and the Bundesjugendorchester.

The Elbphilharmonie Summer will be opened by Afro-pop star Fatoumata Diawara from Mali. Brazilian composer and producer Arthur Verocai enjoys legendary status; his psychedelic-funky debut album from 1972 is a cult classic. The British band The Cinematic Orchestra blends atmospheric jazz with electronica, whilst in the voice of fado singer Mariza one senses not only a great zest for life but also a touch of »tristeza«. Jazz is provided by the French accordion grandmaster Richard Galliano and the American guitarist John Scofield. His newly formed »Long Days Quartet« fits perfectly into the programme, if only by its name: »We’re called that because we mostly play together in the summer,« explains Scofield, »when the days are bright and long.«
